Aamir Khan talks about the #metoo movement on Koffee With Karan

Aamir Khan walked out of Mogul after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced against its director, Subhash Kapoor. He graced the third episode of Koffee with Karan Season 6 on Sunday and the host Karan Johar praised him for stepping up as the first big star in the industry to take a stand against the claimed harassers.

“First of all, women have been facing this kind of exploitation for decades, centuries and not just in films, in life. And it’s really awful that any human being should be pressurized, misused in any manner and preyed upon. I am glad there is a cleanup happening and women are having the strength to speak about it.”

“I was aware of the responsibility on Kiran and me. If the person is innocent, I do not know how I will live with myself because I would have finished the person off. I carry that burden and I think about it every night,” he said.

The perfectionist, however, admitted that it took him a while to realize that he also has been a part of films that objectified women and it’s not just fun. “I wish our films did not encourage this kind of behavior. I have sung a song Khambe Jaisi Kharri Hai, which literally, objectifies women in every sentence.”

He added that he realized when all of it was coming out. “People I have spoken to have told me that they have been hearing stories about so and so for years. I am shocked that this person could be like that. It never occurred to me that a person could be so predatory in nature. The more I am listening about it, I am realizing it is quite rampant. That is really awful and disturbing,” he shared.

Aamir Khan’s upcoming film Thugs of Hindostan is scheduled to release on 8 November.
