Anwar Maqsood is one of the country’s most famous and beloved writers. Well known for his razor sharp wit and the uncanny ability to create puns out of words, that one least expect to be used in that way, Anwar Maqsood has come under backlash on social media for his recent comedy video of his Anwarnama Series. It went controversial when Anwar Maqsood made some unfavorable comments about the Sindhi community.
Reaction for this video was all over twitter, people came back lashing Anwar Maqsood. For them this time his comedy has crossed over the fine line between satire and racism.
This is not the first time, ethnicities have been caricatured by Anwar Maqsood. In the past he teamed up with late Moin Akhtar in a TV show named ”Loose Talk”, in its many episodes comedian Moin Akhtar depicted various ethnicities of Pakistan. There was charm in the old ways but this time people couldn’t tolerate Anwar Maqsood’s version of satire.
Anwar Maqsood has apologized over it in a video message; he also stated that since he doesn’t have any social media account, nor a smart phone otherwise he would have replied instantly over social media. Holding Shah Jo Risalo in his had Anwar Maqsood apologized to everyone, saying that he himself is also Sindhi.
While talking to a news channel Anwar Maqsood said, ‘I love the soil of Sindh which is why I have never left it. Some of my friends from Sindh are upset because of what I did. I want to apologize to the ones who are hurt”.
He also stated, ”Whatever I wrote down, Moin brought it to life. He was the biggest actor in both India and Pakistan”, maybe it was the big reason that his recent video became a major flop as he being an infrequent actor. Though many also came supporting his version of political satire.
