Early on Monday morning at 8:00 am local time, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake jolted New Zealand’s city Wellington. The mid-level earthquake occurred right when Prime Minister Jacinda Adern was giving a live interview to breakfast television.
“We’re just having a bit of an earthquake here, Ryan,” said Jacinda while talking to Auckland-based AM Show presenter Ryan Bridge, from Parliament’s building Beehive.
“Quite a decent shake here, if you see things moving behind me,” she said while maintaining her composure.
Without a second’s break, the Kiwi PM continued her interview amid the shakes that were caused by 52 kilometers near Levin, about 90 kilometers north of Wellington.
“It’s just stopped. We’re fine, I’m not under any hanging lights, I look like I’m in a structurally sound place,” Jacinda then told.
New Zealand also known as ‘Shaky Isles’ faces up to 15,000 earthquakes a year, although only 100–150 are strong enough to be felt.
