Malaysia’s Opposition party calls for ban on Ed Sheeran concert

The British singer-songwriter is set to perform in Kuala Lumpur later this month

Malaysia’s Opposition party has called for a ban on Ed Sheeran from performing in the country on his world tour because of his pro-LGBT stance.

The British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is set to perform at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur later this month as part of his colossal two-year-long Mathematics tour, which will coincide with the eve of the holy month of Ramadan.

As reported, In the statement shared on February 1, the Malaysian Islamic Party called on the government to ban artists who openly support the LGBT community from performing altogether – ahead of Sheeran’s upcoming concert on February 24.

Malaysia’s opposition party urged the government to take a firm stand against the ‘saddening’ decision to allow the event.

The PAS ulama council, known by its Malay abbreviation DUPP, said allowing such artists to perform just before the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan is insensitive.

DUPP argued allowing such performers into the country would be culturally insensitive at a time when many Muslims are fasting, studying the Quran and refraining from vices to get closer to God.

“DUPP urges the government to take a firm stand by cancelling the concert by a Western artiste when Muslims are on the verge of Ramadan. More saddening is that not only will the organisation of the concert pollute the sanctity of the month of Ramadan which is approaching, but the invited artiste has a background of LGBT ideology which is firmly rejected by Malaysia,” DUPP chief Datuk Ahmad Yahaya said in a statement.
