Indian actress-filmmaker Nandita Das says she is disappointed that her film “Manto” will not be releasing in theatres in Pakistan.
In a tweet she has shared her statement, which says, “Disappointed that ‘Manto’ will not be seen in theatres in Pakistan. I was keen as he belongs to both countries equally”.
The film maker has also shared a link of an article, which she has written for a website, siting her views for Film Manto not getting released in cinemas in Pakistan.
“I just got the news that Manto was not passed by their Censor Board. The reasons cited are that ‘the film has anti-Partition narrative theme and explicit scenes, which is against the norms of Pakistani society’,” she wrote.
This film based on the life events of the revolutionary writer Manto has been praised internationally. Nawazuddin Siddiqui has played the titular character, may be the best one in his life time.
For those who haven’t watched Manto yet, it is available on the streaming website Netflix. Film was released earlier this year in September.
In this film the historical events are intervened with fabulous screen play bringing the life and events of Manto’s life in pre to post partition era to the scree. A perfect picture is presented of the rebel termed writer who always wrote about the harsh reality and truth of the society.
Manto, the film, also provides the glimpse of the court case, which was filed against Manto for his short story “Thanda Gosht”. If you have read the story, even the mentioning its name is enough to give you goosebumps.
