Actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani calls out for U.S immigrants at Oscars

Kumail Nanjiani, the Pakistani actor and comedian along with Lupita Nyong’o spoke out for the immigrants at the Oscars by utilizing their presentation turn for the Oscar for production design at the 2018 Academy Awards as an opportunity to voice support for undocumented migrants. Who themselves arrived in the United States as children, Claiming themselves to be as dreamers. Nanjiani was also nominated for best original screenplay for “The Big Sick”.

And the Oscar 2018 winners are…

Before introducing the award for achievement in production design, Lupita Nyong’o and Kumail Nanjiani made one of the awards night’s most critical political statements, without mentioning President Donald Trump’s name.

The two actors introduced themselves as immigrants, Lupita Nyong’o who was born in Mexico and raised in Kenya and Kumail Nanjiani is from Pakistan. The conversation on stage went like the following before they made announcement for the nominees:

Lupita Nyong’o, ”Good evening, we are the two actors you keep hearing about but whose names you have trouble pronouncing”.

Kumail Nanjiani, ”Actually, I have to come clean. Kumail Nanjiani is my stage name. My actual given Pakistani name is Chris Pine. So you can imagine how annoyed I was when the other, when the white Chris Pine showed up. The “real” Chris Pine”.

Lupita Nyong’o, ”We are also immigrants. I’m from Kenya”.

Kumail Nanjiani, ”And I’m from, Kenya is in the house. And I am from Pakistan and Iowa. Two places that nobody in Hollywood can find on a map”.

Lupita Nyong’o, ”And like everyone in this room, and everyone watching at home, we are dreamers. We grew up dreaming of one day working in movies. Dreams are the foundation of Hollywood. And dreams are the foundation of America”.

Kumail Nanjiani, ”And so, to all the dreamers out there, we stand with you. Now, the nominees for achievement in production design”.

They both managed to made an appeal on behalf of the so called Dreamers, as last year, US president Donald Trump announced he would end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provides protection to those who came to the country (U.S) as children. The deadline for lawmakers to find a solution that could avoid deporting thousands of people who have been living in the USA since they were children comes to an end on 5th March.
