The Indian ban on the internet in occupied Kashmir has limited the access of Kashmiris to the outside world, but it has not stopped people of the valley from watching their favorite Turkish series Dirilis: Ertugrul.
The popularity of the most famous drama series has surged in the occupied valley after the Modi government imposed a curfew on August 5, revoking the special status of Kashmir.
The Indian media reported that the drama has become a community hit and it has managed to beat the internet ban and Kashmiri families are enjoying the series.
According to the Indian media, Ertugrul is travelling from one household to another in flash drives, dodging the BJP-government effort to stop local cable operators from airing content produced by Muslim countries such as Turkey, Pakistan, and Iran.
A resident of Srinagar, Rafi Ahmed, told the Indian media that the series is the most-watched in his locality and the entire community watches the series
“It all started soon after the curfew days,” said Ahmed.
He further said that after lock down, youngsters would play cricket at the local playground for the whole day and elders complained to them playing and creating noise all day.
“Someone among us suggested the youth be given Ertugrul to keep them busy and at home, within days, the hours of playing cricket decreased”.
“This made elders curious about the series and how it had so enchanted the young ones,” he added.
The resident said that in his locality now everyone watches the Ertugrul after Maghrib prayer and even they sit together to discuss the series.
The show is based on the history of the Muslim Oghuz Turks and takes place in the 13th century. It centers around the life of Ertugrul, the father of Osman I, who was the founder of the Ottoman Empire.
