Netflix removes Tamil film Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food amid complaints that it hurt religious sentiments.
The film headlines actor Nayanthara as a Hindu Brahmin woman who aspires to become a chef.
As Brahmins do not eat meat, under rigid caste rules, the film drew a massive backlash in India for depicting Hindu Priest’s daughter eating meat.
According to the media reports, Members of hard-line Hindu organisations had objected to many other scenes in the film, including one where the actress is shown offering namaz, or Muslim prayers, before cooking biriyani.
Well, that is bizarre and misguiding the audience. Who on earth offers namaz before cooking biryani?
The streaming giant Netflix said that the Tamil-language film – Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food – was removed at its “licensor’s request”.
The film in question was released in theatres on 1 December, however, it garnered attention for the controversy weeks later when people watched it on Netflix, where it began streaming on 29 December.
