Zara pulled down its controversial ad campaign from its website amid boycott calls!
The fashion label, which has over 60 million followers on Instagram, said the ‘Atelier’ collection was conceived in July and the photos were taken in September
Zara’s Instagram handle saw tens of thousands of comments posted about the photos, many with Palestinian flags, while “#BoycottZara” was also trending on platform X.
In a statement issued days after the controversial ad campaign was posted, the fashion label said, “Unfortunately, some customers felt offended by these images, which have now been removed, and saw in them something far from what was intended when they were created. Zara regrets that misunderstanding and we reaffirm our deep respect towards everyone.”
It is not the first time that the company has been targeted for boycott by supporters of Palestine.
On Monday, Inditex, the company that owns Zara, said that the change was part of a normal process of refreshing content.
The controversial photos featured on Zara’s online store home page on Monday morning were no longer visible on the website or its app by 1230 GMT.
The link on the UK website to Zara Atelier led to a page showcasing last year’s collection.
The controversial advertisement campaign featured mannequins that were missing limbs and statues wrapped in a white shroud.
Some activists and social media users said the ad campaign photographs resembled images from Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza, where more than 18,000 Palestinians have been killed so far including children and thousands of others have been left displaced and wounded.
On the other hand, ahead of the company’s statement, a group of protestors reportedly at a Zara’a branch in Germany raised awareness of the sickening campaign.
Several videos circulating online showed pro-Palestine demonstrators protesting outside several stores in Germany, Tunisia, and the US.
