Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg to produce ‘The Color Purple’ musical

Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey have teamed up for producing ‘The Color Purple’ movie musical for the big screen. As being reported the Tony award-winning musical is going to be adapted for a film by Warner Bros. Apart from Spielberg and Winfrey, Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders are also on board to produce the movie.

‘The Color Purple’ (1982) was a Pulitzer-Prize-winning book by Alice Walker, which was turned into a Spielberg drama. It was later turned into a Broadway musical. Story follows the journey of Celie, an African-American woman in the early 20th century who is abused by her father, husband, and others over the course of four decades.

Spielberg also directed and produced the 1985 film, which received 11 Academy Award nominations but, was shut out of winning an Oscar. Whoopi Goldberg starred as Celie the main character of ‘The Color Purple’ in Spielberg’s movie and received an Oscar nomination. As Opera Winfrey, making her feature acting debut, was also nominated for Oscar. Spielberg did not receive an Academy Award nomination for his directing, but he received a Directors Guild of America Award for outstanding directorial achievement.

The new film based on “The Color Purple” is currently reported to be in the stage of development without a cast, director, or writers yet. But the news was shared by an American film magazine, further details are being awaited.
