Bahawalpur’s Sherbagh Zoo closed after man mauled to death by tigers

Bahawalpur’s Sherbagh Zoo was closed on Thursday after a man was mauled to death by tigers a day earlier.

As reported, an unidentified man was found dead in the cage housing four tigers under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday.

Reportedly, so far none has contacted the police or zoo administration to claim the body.

The human body was discovered by a zoo employee when he went to the cage on Wednesday morning to feed the four tigers kept there.

Bahawalpur’s Sherbagh Zoo has been closed by the authorities till the investigations into the incident are completed.

Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab Mohsin Naqvi and Commissioner Bahawalpur have constituted separate committees to investigate the shocking development.

The committee has been directed to submit its initial report within 24 hours and a detailed report, fixing the responsibility for the incident, within seven days.

According to an official handout, Commissioner Dr Ehtasham Anwar Mahar has constituted a committee to conduct a probe into the incident.

The additional deputy commissioner (revenue ) is the convener of the inquiry committee, while its members include the head of the forensic department of Quaid-e-Azam Medical College (QAMC), Bahawalpur, Forest Conservators Sheikh Manzoor Ahmed, Punjab Forensic Science Agency’s local head, Rescue 1122 DEO, and in charge of the police crime scene investigation, Punjab.

Meanwhile, the autopsy of the unidentified victim was carried out at the Bahawal Victoria Hospital.

According to the preliminary postmortem report, the man was ripped apart by the big cats.

It added that the man attempted to defend himself but the animals mauled him to death.

The wildlife department sources shared with the news outlet that tigers seem to have eaten some of the flesh of the body’s lower torso, including the legs.

Deputy Commissioner Zaheer Anwar Jappa said that a thorough inquiry into the mysterious death of a man in the tigers’ cage would be conducted and the negligent zoo officials would be taken to task.
