Body Shop initiates recycled plastics programme to protect environment

British cosmetics company Body Shop has taken an initiative to protect the environment, people and critters as much as it can with the launch of its new Community Trade recycled plastic that will help to tackle plastic pollution and benefit the livings and planet.

With the company’s Community Trade fair trade programme, the beauty product company has announced that it will purchase 250 tonnes of recycled plastics from Bengaluru, India that will be used in 3 million 250 ml shampoo bottles by December 2019.

According to a press release, “In its first year, The Body Shop will purchase 250 tonnes of Community Trade recycled plastic to use in nearly three million 250ml haircare bottles by the end of 2019. This marks the start of a wider ambition, which is to introduce Community Trade Recycled plastic across all PET plastic used by The Body Shop within three years.”

The programme has been started off with the title ‘Plastics For Change’ will also serve to empower people as it will be collected by the waste pickers.

The recycled plastic which is being purchased by the company will be collected from a local partner called Hasiru Dala, an organization of waste workers which fights for waste picker rights, reports Independent.

According to the company representative the programme is “starting small and scaling up in a responsible and sustainable manner.”

As part of the scheme, The Body Shop has also announced recycle and re-fills rewards for donors in partnership with innovative recycling company TerraCycle.

As per the offer, for every five empty bottles one can return to a Body Shop store, will be given a £5 voucher to spend.

Donors can also recycle other branded beauty products but this will not entitle them to the Recycle Rewards scheme.
