Hindu-Muslim clashes in India’s Haryana, Gurgaon leave 5 dead and more than 50 injured.
At least five people, including two police officers, are reported to have been killed in clashes between Hindus and Muslims in Gurgaon, India.
The incident erupted after a Hindu religious procession passed through a Muslim-majority area in Haryana state, about 50 km south of the capital New Delhi on Monday.
As reported, fresh riots broke out after a religious procession, called ‘Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra,’ passed by a Muslim-majority area in the Nuh region.
The violence soon spread to the neighboring province in the evening.
As reported, a mosque was burned down and a cleric, the Imam of the mosque was shot and burned in clashes that continued on Tuesday.
The imam was allegedly stabbed to death by a mob of 70 to 80 people who also burned down the Anjuman Jama Masjid, reports Indian media.
The police said they had identified the attackers who set fire to the mosque and arrested several of them.
As a security measure, the authorities shut down the internet, additional security forces were deployed and a lockdown has been declared as the violence continued.
Schools and universities were ordered to be closed on Tuesday.
