Karachi records coldest day of March in 43 years

Cold weather is likely to persist in the city till March 4.

Karachi on Saturday recorded the coldest day of March in 43 years.

Heavy rainfall coupled with thunderstorms on Friday has led to a cold wave gripping the metropolis, turning the weather chilly.

Karachi recorded a minimum temperature of 14.5°C today (Saturday).

The lowest temperature recorded was 19 degrees Celsius on March 9, 1979.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz, cold and dry weather will prevail in Karachi until Monday (March 4), after a short spell of “unusual” rain.

However, there is no chance of more rain in Karachi as the westerly waves have departed, he said.

The temperature in Karachi has dropped by 4°C, he said, adding, “The city is likely to record a maximum temperature of 22°C today.”

He added that the current cold wave was unusual as chilly weather does not usually last continuously in March.

On Friday, the rain received by various areas of Karachi was recorded as follows according to data from the Met Office:

Surjani Town received the highest amount of rainfall i.e., 7 millimetres, followed by Keamari (5mm), Orangi Town (4.8mm), Quaidabad (4mm), PAF Faisal Base (2.5mm) Korangi (2mm), Saadi Town (2mm), DHA (2mm), Jinnah Terminal (1mm) and Old Airport (1mm).
