Murtaza Wahab won the Karachi Mayor election on Thursday as per the unofficial result.
Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) candidate Murtaza Wahab won the election for Karachi mayor after securing 173 votes and his rival, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Hafiz Naeemur Rehman.
Hafiz Naeem managed to get 161 votes as per unofficial sources.
On the other hand, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamat-e-Islami’s (JI) workers clashed outside the Karachi Arts Council, the venue of the election, after Murtaza Wahab becomes Karachi’s mayor.
JI — which supposedly had the backing of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) — already announced that it would resist any attempts to influence the results and alleged that the PPP had “abducted” PTI’s union committee chairmen to “rig the results”.
The clashes led to the roads leading from the city’s Shaheen Complex to MR Kiyani Road being blocked, several vehicles were damaged, a person was injured, and some party workers were arrested.
Both the party’s workers were separated by law enforcers prior to the elections, however, they were not enough to keep them calm as they clashed following after the results were announced.
