PML-N and MQM-P will contest Feb 8 elections jointly

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) will jointly be contesting the upcoming general elections — scheduled to take place on February 8, 2024.

The announcement from both parties was made on Tuesday following a meeting of an MQM-P delegation led by Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Farooq Sattar, and Syed Mustafa Kamal with the PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif in Lahore at the party’s Model Town secretariat.

Following the meeting, PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique speaking to reporters said, “It had been decided that both parties will contest February 8 polls jointly”.

He added that they would have consultations on legal, constitutional, and other matters, adding that the country required a comprehensive course of action to tackle the multiple challenges.

Dr. Farooq Sattar of MQM-P said both sides would formulate a joint strategy for the February 8 elections and stressed no single party could tackle the issues that Pakistan was experiencing.

MQM-P leader Mustafa Kamal added that three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif was considered the most senior politician of the region and no one could match his experience.

Mustafa Kamal also thanked the PML-N leadership, including Maryam Nawaz, for the hospitality extended to them.

It is pertinent to mention here that PML-N, PPP, and MQM had been coalition partners in the previous government, and joined hands to remove PTI’s Imran Khan from power.

Following the confirmation of the election date, PPP recently announced that it was open to forming an electoral alliance with the PTI to counter former ally PML-N.
