Senior Pakistani jurist and former Senator Syed Muhammad Zafar, popularly known as SM Zafar, passed away in Lahore on Thursday after a prolonged illness. He was 93.
SM Zafar’s family confirmed on Thursday.
“We are deeply grieved to announce the passing away of S.M. Zafar, beloved husband, father, and grandfather. May his soul be received in light and love by our Rabb. May he be granted the highest place in Jannat,” a statement from the family read.
The funeral prayer of SM Zafar will be offered tomorrow after Asr’s prayer at around 4:30 PM at Jamia Masjid A Block Canal View Society.
SM Zafar announced his decision to retire from the world of politics back in 2018.
The acquittal of Pakistani Scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, the discussion and draft of the 1973 Constitution, and participation in the drafting of the 18th constitutional amendment are some of his major legal contributions.
He served as the Federal Minister for Law and Justice from 1965 to 1969.
In 1975, he was elected as the President of the High Court Bar Association in Lahore.
He co-founded and served as the Chairman of the Human Rights Society of Pakistan in 1976.
He also served as the Chancellor of Hamdard University.
