A Tsunami warning has been issued after a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake rocked central Japan on Monday.
The quake, which struck on New Year’s Day, was felt in Tokyo and across the Kanto area at 4 pm local time.
The tsunami warning issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency urged people to quickly leave the coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama and Yamagata prefectures, public broadcaster NHK reported.
Social media was soon flooded with the first images arriving from the affected areas.
According to the weather agency, Tsunami of up to 5 metres high are believed to be reaching Noto in Ishikawa Prefecture,
Waves more than 1 metre high hit the coast of Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture, NHK added.
Hokuriku Electric Power said it is checking for any irregularities at its nuclear power plants.
Following the development,the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has also issued tsunami alert for North Korea and Russia’s Far East.
