US Supreme Court rules Donald Trump can stay on the Colorado ballot

On Monday, the US Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Donald Trump can stay on the election ballot.

The 9-0 decision by the conservative-majority court in the high-stakes case means the Republican front-runner’s name will appear on voting slips in the Colorado primary on Tuesday.

The SC decision also effectively ends efforts in other states to disqualify him from running in the 2024 general election over claims his conduct on January 6 bars him from office.

The decision emerges as a fatal blow for the states trying to kick him off just 24 hours before as 15 states are set to vote on Super Tuesday.

The former US president, Trump 77, has now cleared one of the hurdles to his campaign before his likely rematch with President Joe Biden in the November general election.

Trump has dominated the Republican primaries so far, with his final rival Nikki Haley only winning one contest in Washington D.C. on Sunday night, with just over 2,000 voters taking part in the ballot.

The former president was initially removed from the ballots in Colorado, Maine, and Illinois for violating the Section 3 ‘insurrection’ clause of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. 

As reported, the decisions were based on the argument that Trump should be banned from holding federal office because he ‘engaged in insurrection or rebellion’ on January 6, 2021.

Trump then challenged the ruling from the Colorado Supreme Court, ultimately leading to today’s decision.
