Pakistani shortfilm ‘Blue: A Kaleidoscope’ narrates the story of rape victim’s trauma

A Pakistani short film Blue: A Kaleidoscope has been released for audience narrating the traumatized story of rape survivors about how a society treats them. The film displays that how lack of support from the community makes their situation worst.

The release of the film was postponed due to the coronavirus lockdown, it can be watched on Instagram. The announcement of the release of the movie comes at a time when the country is openly speaking against violence faced by women following the rape of a woman on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway and murder of a six-year-old Marwah in Karachi’s PIB Colony.

The director of the shortfilm, Daniyal Afzal, has told the story of a suffering faced by a 10-year-old rape victim. The story of the film showcases that the sexual assault of the minor girl is recorded and the video goes viral in her area. It is based on the concept of a 2015 BBC report, titled ‘How a rape was filmed and shared in Pakistan’, by journalist Amber Shamsi.

“Women are routinely silenced in Pakistan, said Afzal, adding that it is high time that we raise our voices against the trauma a rape survivor face.

He added that people generally don’t listen to rape survivors and this is what we have tried to show in the movie.

The premiere of the short film was also held at a film festival in Hong Kong.
