Kane Williamson is likely to miss the ODI World Cup after suffering an injury at IPL.
Williamson’s absence from the World Cup would be a huge blow for New Zealand!
New Zealand’s ODI captain has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee after he was injured in his first IPL match of the season for Gujarat Titans.
Kane Williamson will require surgery on his injured right knee after scans on Tuesday confirmed he’d ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament while fielding for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, the Black Caps said in a statement.
The recovery timeline for the knee injury could see him miss the World Cup later this year.
Williamson landed awkwardly while attempting a catch at the deep square leg boundary in the 13th over of Super Kings’ innings when he had leapt to intercept a ball headed for six from Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Wishing Kane Williamson a speedy recovery.
“You take Kane the player for a start, but then Kane the leader and the person he is within our group as well, it’s a huge spanner in the works for us,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said in a statement.
“We haven’t given up hope that he might be right but at this stage, it does look unlikely. Our first thoughts are with Kane at the moment, it’s a tough time for him, it’s not an injury you expect…it hits you pretty hard,” he added.
