UN chief calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza ‘in name of humanity’

Guterres is deeply disturbed by the “dramatic loss of life” in several hospitals in Gaza.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza ‘in the name of humanity’!

The death toll in Gaza from Israeli attacks has surged to 11,240 including 4,630 children since October 7, according to the Gaza media office.

The death toll is feared to rise amid the Israeli blockade of hospitals in Gaza.

A statement issued by the Spokesman Stephane Dujarric for UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday said:

“The Secretary-General is deeply disturbed by the horrible situation and dramatic loss of life in several hospitals in Gaza.”

“In the name of humanity, the Secretary-General calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire,” Stephane Dujarric said.

On the other hand, heavy rain in Gaza on Tuesday brought new concerns and challenges for Palestinians, many of whom are homeless and living in makeshift tents after 39 days of Israeli bombardment and offensive in the Gaza Strip.

It is pertinent to mention here that The United Nations secretary general has been calling for an immediate ceasefire to end “epic suffering” in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the Israeli offensive.

However, the UN seems to be only a vocal organization having no powers to stop the ongoing Israeli strikes in the Gaza Stirps which have left more than one million Palestinians displaced and thousands killed.

The secretary-general told reporters on Nov 6 that Gaza was becoming a “graveyard for children”, with more than 4,100 killed since the fighting began, according to the Ministry of Health in the enclave.

“Hundreds of girls and boys are reportedly being killed and injured every day,” he said.

“More journalists have reportedly been killed over a four-week period than in any conflict in at least three decades,” he said, adding, “More United Nations aid workers have been killed than in any comparable period in the history of our organisation.”

“The unfolding catastrophe makes the need for a humanitarian ceasefire more urgent with every passing hour,” Guterres told reporters at UN headquarters in New York City.

“The parties to the conflict – and, indeed, the international community – face an immediate and fundamental responsibility: to stop this inhuman collective suffering and dramatically expand humanitarian aid to Gaza.”
