Meta’s Facebook, Instagram restored after a global outage

Meta says it has resolved a "technical issue" which caused Facebook, Messenger and Instagram to go down.

Meta’s Facebook and Instagram have been restored after a global outage.

Hundreds of thousands of users across the globe were locked out of Meta-owned platforms Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads on Tuesday.

As reported, the disruptions started at around 10:00 a.m. ET (1500 GMT).

After sorting out the issue, Meta said that it had resolved a “technical issue” which caused Facebook, Messenger and Instagram to go down.

“Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. We resolved the issue … for everyone who was impacted,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a statement posted on X.

There were more than 550,000 reports of disruptions for Facebook and about 92,000 for Instagram at the peak of the outage, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.
The outage for WhatsApp and Threads was much smaller, according to Downdetector, which tracks outages by collating status reports from several sources including users.
The Meta’s glitch on Tuesday was among the top trending topics on X, formerly Twitter.
As the outage was trending on X, the platform’s owner Elon Musk took a shot at Meta with a post that said: “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working”.

The biggest outage Meta experienced was in 2021 when Facebook, Messenger, Whatsapp and Instagram services went down for almost six hours

On that occasion, founder Mark Zuckerberg apologised for the disruption caused.
