France halted the Apple iPhone 12 sales in the country over too-high levels of electromagnetic radiation!
As reported, multiple French telecommunications stores had pulled the iPhone 12 from their online sales as of Wednesday.
The development comes as France’s National Frequency Agency (ANFR) ordered Apple on Tuesday “to implement all available means to quickly remedy this malfunction” or the company will have to recall the phones already sold in France.
“For phones already sold, Apple must take corrective action as soon as possible to bring the affected phones into compliance. Otherwise, it will be up to Apple to recall them,” the ANFR said in a statement.
Jean-Noël Barrot, a French minister in charge of digital, in a social media post, wrote that the waves can change after the phone is released depending on updates.
“The wave levels that smartphones emit can vary during a software update. It is undoubtedly because of an update after its release that the iPhone 12 exceeded the authorized threshold. And it is a simple update that will bring it back into compliance,” he wrote.
The iPhone 12 was first released in September 2020 and is still being sold worldwide.
The move in France could lead to EU-wide restrictions.
EU countries will now have three months to object to the French restriction but if they do not object, it could lead to EU-wide restrictions on Apple’s iPhone 12, a European Commission spokesperson confirmed to news publication.
This is due to the EU directive on radio equipment.
On the other hand, Belgium said on Thursday it would review potential health risks linked to Apple’s iPhone 12.
The move raised the prospect that more European countries might ban the model after France ordered a halt to sales due to breaches of radiation exposure limits.
