OyeYeah picks 5 Bollywood films that courted controversies

OyeYeah has picked 5 Bollywood films that courted controversies!

The Kerala Stories:

The Kerala story is the latest Bollywood release that sparked a fresh batch of controversy.

The film is based on the story of a group of women from Kerala who are converted to Islam and join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The film has been banned in Bengal while its screening was stopped in Chennai.

It landed in controversy since the release of its trailer, which claimed to be based on real-life incidents where 32,000 women in Kerala are trapped under this hazardous scheme, converted, and inducted into ISIS.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar:

Ranveer Singh starrer Jayeshbhai Jordaar hit theatres on May 13, 2022.

Ahead of its release, a scene from the trailer landed the film in legal trouble.

As per a report, an NGO called Youth Against Crime has moved the Delhi High Court challenging Jayeshbhai Jordaar over the depiction of a prenatal sex-determination scene in the trailer.

The Kashmir Files:

The Kashmir Files released in 2022, is a drama film written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri.

The film presents a fictional storyline centered around the 1990s exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Indian-Ocupied Kashmir.

A row has erupted in India after an Israeli director described a controversial film about Kashmir as propaganda and a “vulgar movie”, prompting the Israeli ambassador to issue an apology.

While, Singapore lapped a ban on the controversial Indian film, the exodus of Hindus from Muslim-majority Kashmir, citing concerns over its “potential to cause enmity between different communities”.

Laal Singh Chaddha:

Aamir Khan’s starrer Laal Singh Chaddha is the Bollywood remake of the 1994 American hit movie Forrest Gump.

Ahead of the film’s release, social media was abuzz with boycott calls against Laal Singh Chaddha.

And its massive failure at the box office was attributed to the controversies it stirred.

Complaints were filed in several parts of India, with the organizations alleging that the film not just mocked Hindu gods but also objections to its content were raised for “disrespecting the Indian Army and hurting Hindu Sentiments. ”

Reports claim that the boycott hashtag started to trend after a section of the Internet dug out bits from Aamir Khan’s 2015 interview, where he had spoken about the “growing intolerance” in the country. During an event, Aamir had said, “As an individual, as part of this country as a citizen, we read in the papers what is happening, we see it on the news and certainly, I have been alarmed. I can’t deny it. I have been alarmed by a number of incidents”.

Documentary film Kaali:

Documentary film Kaali’s poster sparked outrage in India as it showed the Hindu Goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette and holding a rainbow flag.

Two FIRs were filed against the Toronto-based filmmaker Leena Manimekalai in Delhi and UP for hurting the religious sentiments.

Last year in July, a court in India summoned a filmmaker after she shared the said poster in a tweet, depicting a woman dressed as Hindu goddess Kali smoking a cigarette
