I Have Given Birth from Heart, Says Shushmita Sen on Adoption

Shushmita Sen surprised many when she chose to adopt a baby girl at the age of 24. For a superstar at the time, single woman, it was quite a bold move and required a lot from her. More than a decade down the lane, after adopting another daughter, Shushmita thinks “it was the wisest decision of her life”.

“It stabilized my life. People think it was a great act of charity and wonderful action but it was self-preservation. It was me protecting myself. Doing something that encompasses your heart, your calling always makes sure that you stay true to your DNA and who you are,” said the former Miss Universe to a women audience at an event recently.

Shush added that while the decision was tough, there has not been a day she regretted it. The actress stated that there has not been a day she didn’t feel the joy of motherhood, despite not giving a natural birth.

“In natural birth, the mother and the child connect through the umbilical cord but in adoption, the mother and the child are connected by this higher power, a connection that you cannot cut off,” said the Biwi Number 1 actress.

“I have birth from the heart,” she beautifully phrased.

Adding further the actress said, “I have had the privilege of experiencing it twice. I have not missed a day of feeling the joy of motherhood.”

Shushmita also reflected back on the difficulties that came between her choice and her career. Regardless, she found a balance to maintain happiness in life.

“Yes, the tough part was to do that at the age of 24-year-old when I was at the top of my game in my career. Being an actress is a challenging job. You have to be all about yourself. Your vanity has to be at its highest for you to be successful,” said the 43-year old as she recalled the tough days.

“But I am proud of the 24-year-old because I could have delayed the process, ignored the calling but I didn’t do that, that I do take credit for,” concluded the actress.
