Around five months ago, Wasim Akram’s wife, Shaniera Akram, who happens to be an activist herself, shared how disgusting medical waste had been dumped at Karachi’s Sea View beach.
“Our beach is a bio-hazard zone and needs to be shut down immediately. I am so sorry to the people including myself who use and love our beach but this is beyond safe,” Shaniera had said, vowing to take action.
Following the statement, Shaniera didn’t sit peacefully. Rather she gathered volunteers and together they all helped Sindh Government clean up Clifton beach in Karachi.
As difficult as it might seem and sound, Shaniera and her team of volunteers have completed their task successfully for now.
Husband Wasim Akram took to Twitter to commend the efforts of his wife and share that the Clifton beach in Karachi was as good as new.
“Thanks to Shaniera for initiating this needful campaign and to all government officials and massive thank you to workers who come there every morning to make it look the way it is now,” Wasim wrote on his Twitter.
“This could be anywhere in the world. It’s a beautiful beach, it’s a clean beach. Credit to all of the people who have been involved,” Wasim is heard stating.
“This is proof that if we all unite and make a resolution, be it as a neighbourhood or as a nation, we can achieve it. So well done Karachi, we got a clean beach,” adds the ex-cricketer further.
Shaniera too shared her husband’s post on Twitter with great pride. “I’m so proud!! What a city we have,” wrote the cricketer’s wife.
Wasim’s and Shaniera’s friend and ex-cricketer Shoaib Akhter alongside sports commentator Zainab Abbas also congratulated Shaniera for her efforts.
