Global COVID-19 cases surge past 12 million

More than 12 million COVID-19 infection cases have now been recorded across the world, with over half in the United States and Latin America.

According to an AFP tally of official sources at 0955 GMT on Thursday, at least 12,063,425 cases and 549,451 deaths have been recorded.

Reportedly, the number of infections has doubled since May 31.  And about half of those who caught the virus have recovered.

The United States is the worst-hit country with 3,055,101 cases and 132,309 deaths, while  Brazil is on second spot having registered 1,713,160 cases and 67,964 deaths.

The tallies probably reflect only a fraction of the number of infections as many countries test only the most serious cases.

In Tokyo, 224 new cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded, marking a record high for the Japanese capital in a single day. The authorities are focused on testing the city’s night-life districts.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike has attributed the recent uptick partly to an increase in testing, 3,400 of which resulted in today’s confirmed cases. Koike, who won re-election as governor on Sunday, has promised to boost testing capacity to 10,000 a day.

“Although the increase in (testing) is a contributing factor, we need more vigilance in monitoring the trend in infected people,” she said in remarks streamed online.

Meanwhile, Indonesia has also reported its biggest single-day increase in new coronavirus cases, with 2,657 infections, taking cases tally to 70,736.

Health ministry official Achmad Yurianto said that Indonesia has also reported 58 new coronavirus-related deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country to 3,417.

On Thursday, India has reported a record one-day surge in infections of nearly 25,000, taking the nationwide COVID-19 tally to 791,559.
