Ehd-e-Wafa Episode 1 Review: Opening Garners Mix Reviews

ISPR and Hum TV’s joint venture Ehd-e-Wafa aired its first episode last night and in all honestly, left us a little unsure about the hype and expectations from the drama. While the star cast and potentially strong storyline are the plus factors, it was looped in the acting that left most of the viewers uneasy in their seats.

What started off as a chirpy lively sequence of Ahad Raza Mir, Osman Khalid Butt, Ahmed Ali Akbar, and Wahaj Ali, soon became an exchange of a little over the top dialogues and acting as Zara Noor Abbas and Alizey Shah made their respective entries.

Zara was still probably able to salvage her character Rani, portrayed as a loud, immature girl but Alizey’s first scene felt completely out of depth as Dua stopped the whole traffic to ‘explain road rules to an elderly couple’. Quite a cringeworthy scene to say the least in comparison to Alizey’s next appearance with her relatives as she unrealistically and unnecessarily squeaked like a child. Here’s hoping her character would evolve for better in the coming days.

On the boys end Saad (Ahad), Shahzain (Osman), Sheheryar (Ahmed) and Shariq (Wahaj) played around as goofy college boys who quite frankly seemed too casual to be in cadet college. However, giving the benefit of this being the very episode, we are quite optimistic about the future of Ehd-e-Wafa.

A pleasant surprise was to see Brigadier Faraz Ahmed return in his calm and classy Army attire. Needless to say, his short scene reminded most of us of his good old ABC days.

All in all the first episode was nothing more than an introduction of all characters, and a little over the top display of acting by most of the actors. Presumably, as the drama unfolds, we would be better able to get an understanding of the characters or they might get into the skin a little more convincingly.

In either case, we are still hooked to Ehd-e-Wafa for its stellar cast and unconventional storyline. The direction of Saifi Hassan and written by Mustafa Afridi, the drama will be airing next Sunday at 8 p.m. and we are surely tuning in.
