Cannes Announces Films List That Were To Be Showcased at 2020 Festival

The who’s who of entertainment industry around the globe every year keenly look forward to the 73-year old French film festival Cannes, but sadly 2020 edition has been canceled on the back of COVID-19 pandemic. The film festival however did receive a record 2,067 submissions to be showcased at Cannes that was earlier scheduled for mid-May, out of which 56 were selected and announced by the judges as the movies that would have premiered at the event if it had taken place in Paris, after being postponed to July.

But as fate would have it, seeing the pandemic taking the world in its tight grip even after six months, the festival has been altogether canceled for this year. The films who made it to Cannes however were announced in an empty UGC Normandie cinema France, where Cannes president Pierre Lescure and festival director Thierry Fremaux were present.

The films that made it to Cannes included filmmaker Steve McQueen’s two projects Mangrove and Lover’s Rock, Pete Docter’s Pixar film Soul, Francois Ozon’s Summer of ’85, Naomi Kawase’s True Mothers, Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round, Maïwenn’s DNA, Hong Sang-soo’s Heaven, Sang-ho Yeon’s Peninsula and Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatchand.

Out of the selected films, 16 films boast women directors whereas 12 are directorial debut for their makers. Cannes however ensured that the films are ‘on the map’ and would be supported by the festival now regardless of their screening delay.
