Dev Patel is a well-known British actor of Indian heritage, who rose to fame in the coming-of-age drama, Skins. Since starring in that series in 2006, the London-born actor has gone on to have a highly successful career.

Known for his likable persona, the 31-year-old often plays characters that the audience can empathize with. Patel has appeared in some Hollywood blockbusters, along with a few lesser-known movies.

Here are some of the best films that he has acted in over the years.

Chappie

Chappie was the third film from the exciting District 9 director, Neill Blomkamp. The South African filmmaker followed that up with Elysium in 2013 and Chappie in 2015.

Patel played the lead role in the latter and showed off his action credentials. This also helped boost his profile among international audiences.

Slumdog Millionaire

Danny Boyle gave Patel his big-screen breakthrough in 2008 in Slumdog Millionaire. The iconic love story went on to win a whopping eight Academy Awards, and Patel was lauded for his performance as Jamal Malik.

Perhaps one of the reasons for Slumdog Millionaire’s success was the recognisability of the game show that featured in it. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is so popular across the world that viewers notice the familiarity of the title which could have helped to pique interest in the title.

One of Patel’s lesser-known movies, The Man Who Knew Infinity played at several film festivals including the Toronto Film Festival, Dubai International Film Festival, and Singapore International Film Festival.

The film was met with positive, if slightly middling reviews, where the acting rather than the plot was the best feature.

 

Lion

Aside from Slumdog Millionaire, Lion is one of the most critically acclaimed films that Patel has starred in. Garth Davis’s directorial debut features the English actor as a man who sets out in search of his long-lost family.

Based on a true story, the touching drama was nominated for six Academy Awards. Patel starred alongside Nicole Kidman, and they were both praised for their performances.

 

Patel is still in the early stages of his career, but he has already produced some memorable performances.

He will feature in The Green Knight in 2021 and Monkey Man in 2022.

The latter will mark his first outing as director, so it will be exciting to see how he does in the chair as opposed to shining in front of the camera.
