New York Fashion School publicly apologises for ‘racist’ fashion show

A  fashion college of New York has sent out a public apology after a catwalk show was labeled racist, international media reported.

Earlier this month, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) hosted a fashion event where models were asked to wear prosthetic ears, lips and black, bushy eyebrows for a collection run by fashion design students at the event in Manhattan.

The accessories generated a major backlash online after an African-American model said she was being pressured to wear bizarre, “racist” accessories.

“I stood there almost ready to break down, telling the staff that I felt incredibly uncomfortable with having to wear these pieces and that they were clearly racist,” Amy Lefevre said.

She was told, “it was fine to feel uncomfortable for only 45 seconds”.

The chair of the modern fine arts fashion design course which ran the show has now apologised directly to the model.

“I deeply apologise for any harm and pain I’ve caused to those involved with the show,” he said in an Instagram post, “including Amy Lefevre.

“I take full responsibility and am committed to learning from this situation and taking steps to do better.”
