Protesters target bakery named ‘Karachi’ in Indian city of Bengaluru

After believing that the local bakery in the Indian city of Bengaluru being owned by a Pakistani company since its name was Karachi Bakery, mobsters thronged the bakery outlet.

The owner had to cover half of the name on the signboard after the mob protest. Photos of the outlet are making rounds on the on social media, showing a banner covering the word “Karachi”. There is also a national flag displayed with prominence on the glass front of the store.

According to the local media, a group of 20 to 25 people had allegedly gathered in front of the bakery, located in Indiranagar area of the city and raised slogans demanding that the name of the bakery be changed as it had a connection to Pakistan.

While talking to the local media the manager of the Karachi Bakery, said, “The mob stayed for about half an hour. The men claimed to know people in the army. They thought we were from Pakistan. But we have been using this name for the last 53 years. The owners are Hindus; only the name is ‘Karachi’. To satisfy them, we put up the Indian flag.”

This bakery is part of a chain founded in 1952 by Sindhi man named Khanchand Ramnami, who immigrated to Indian Hyderabad at the time of Partition. The bakery is famous for its biscuits and other savory items.

The recent incident has unleashed a fresh wave of anti-Pakistan sentiments and protests amid of the recent Pakistan India tension in wake of the Pulwama Attack in the Indian Occupied Kashmir region. Unfortunately, a section of Indian media has been whiffing anti-Pakistan and Kashmir sentiments after the attack. But sanity must prevail.

The incident didn’t go unnoticed on social media and  people were quick to respond to this hate-mongering by Indian civilians.
