Achakzai accepts defeat, congratulates Zardari on winning presidential election

Achakzai managed to get just 119 votes in the presidential election

Mahmood Khan Achakzai accepting his defeat, congratulated Asif Ali Zardari on winning the presidential election on Saturday.

He termed it the “beginning of a new era” as it was a “rare” poll which was held in a good environment.

The Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) chief and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) candidate Mahmood Khan Achakzai managed to get just 119 votes.

Meanwhile, his collation-backed opponent Asif Ali Zardari secured 716 votes from the Senate of Pakistan, the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan.

Mahmood Khan Achakzai, after losing the presidential election said that the presidential election was generally fair.

“The most unusual thing about this election was that the first time it has happened votes were neither bought nor sold,” he said while speaking to the media outside the parliament in Islamabad.

Achakzai told reporters that it was a unique election in which “horse-trading” was not witnessed.

“There are some people in Pakistan who think that everything can be bought and sold in Pakistan,” he said, adding that a distinction is growing between people who could be bought and those who could not.

He also expressed his gratitude to the PTI leadership for their support.

PkMAP Chairman Achakzai while talking to the media, also requested PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to tell the saner elements in his party to control the charged political environment.

He said: “You (Nawaz) may not like your opponents but a huge population of the country has voted for them.”

“We have to bear and take care of each other. It can be done in a way. Why are we taking parliamentary problems being taken to court?” Achakzai added.

Achakzai noted that it would be better if the charged political environment could be controlled because the country was embroiled in myriad problems.

“We are small, [but our] problems are big. Our small mistakes will destroy everything, I request for the sake of the country that we have to sit together to resolve it,” Achakzai concluded.
