Breaking: PML-N and PPP lock deal on power sharing

Shehbaz Sharif will be the joint candidate for prime minister while Asif Zardari will be the joint candidate for president, Bilawal

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) finally reached an agreement late Tuesday night to form a coalition government after days of negotiations following the February 8 election.

According to the sources, the two sides agreed that PPP-nominated candidates would get the posts of president, chairman Senate, governor Punjab and governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“PPP and PML-N have achieved the required number and [now] we are in a position to form the government,” PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said addressing a press conference.

Shehbaz Sharif will be the joint candidate for prime minister while Asif Zardari will be the joint candidate for president, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced.

Bilawal also thanked the PML-N for supporting his father Asif Ali Zardari as the next president.

Bilawal added that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independent candidates and the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) failed to achieve a simple majority to form government in the Centre.

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has said the numbers are now complete with the PPP to elect Asif Ali Zardari as the next president for the next five years.

Addressing the joint presser, Shehbaz Sharif also thanked other allied parties including Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid in this regard.

Shehbaz Sharif said that we had asked the PTI-backed winning independent candidates to prove their majority and form the government but they did not have sufficient numbers to form the government.

The meeting between the PPP and PML-N leaders took place at Ishaq Dar’s residence in Islamabad

PMLN leaders Malik Ahmad Khan, Ishaq Dar and Azam Nazeer Tarar were also present at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Nadeem Afzal Chan and Murad Ali Shah were part of the PPP delegation.
