Indian Muslim politician Atiq Ahmed, with a criminal background, and his brother Ashraf were shot dead by three individuals posing as journalists while they were being taken for a medical examination while in police custody in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.
The three shooters, pretending to be media personnel and carrying media ID cards with the name of a local channel, have been identified as Lavlesh Tiwari, Sunny, and Arun Maurya.
“According to preliminary information, three persons posing as journalists approached them and opened fire… The attackers have been held and are being questioned,” the police said.
While the incident was telecast live on Indian news channel and the said clip is now being circulated on social media.
The clip shows after carrying out the attack, the assailants can be heard chanting Hindu slogans.
After the incident, authorities banned gathering of more than four people under Section 144, on Sunday in the state ruled by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
A three-member judicial panel has been set up to investigate the incident.
According to the Indian media reports, The police of Uttar Pradesh said several days earlier that they had shot dead Ahmed’s 19-year-old son and his accomplice in a shootout, who was wanted in a case of murder.
Atiq Ahmed, registered in assault and murder cases, in a petition submitted to India’s apex court had stated that his life was in danger from the police.
