Indus River’s course diverted into a tunnel at Dasu Hydropower Project site

The construction activities have been started on the temporary dam after the diversion of the river.

Indus River’s course was successfully diverted into a tunnel at the Dasu Hydropower Project site!

The Dasu Hydropower Project under construction in the Upper Kohistan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has crossed an important milestone.

The mighty River Indus was successfully diverted after the completion of one of the two diversion tunnels. Instead of its natural course, Indus is now flowing through a 1.3 Km diversion tunnel with a 20 m width and 23 m height.

According to a WAPDA spokesperson, the Indus River has been diverted at the Dasu Hydropower Project site, the Indus River is now passing through a diversion tunnel instead of a natural channel at the project site.

The construction activities have been started on the temporary dam after the diversion of the river. After the completion of the temporary dam, the construction of the main dam of the Dasu project will begin.

A large number of general managers, representatives of contractors and consultants, engineers and workers were present on the occasion of diverting the course of the river today.

Wapda chairman Lt-Gen (retd) Sajjad Ghani congratulated the project management on diverting the course of the Indus River.

 

Chinese and Pakistani workers at the site expressed their joy at successfully diverting river water into the tunnel.

 

As reported, the second under-construction diversion tunnel of the project will also be completed by mid-April 2023.

The 4,320 MW Dasu Hydropower Project is being completed in two phases.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to produce electricity in 2026.
