Legendary Pakistani artist Jamil Naqsh passes away in London

Legendary artist, Jamil Naqsh after painting over Six decades, finally puts his brush down and leaves his palette with all the colours he knew.

Naqsh who was residing in London since 2012, passed away after suffering from ‘serious pneumonia’ at the age of 80.

As being reported he was admitted to St Mary’s Hospital in London on May 7, and doctors were not optimistic about his deteriorating health.

The news of his passing away shared in a statement from his wife Sobia Naqsh.

 

He has left behind an illustrious career in the field of Fine Arts, by redefining Abstract, Still-Life, Calligraphy and many other genres.

Naqsh was a celebrated artist, his famous works include calligraphy, pigeons and figurative paintings.

Naqsh trained as a miniaturist under former NCA professor Ustaad Haji Sharif in Lahore starting in 1953.

He left the National College of Arts without completing his degree as he felt it was the experience, not the qualification that was important.

Jamil Naqsh was born in Kairana, India in 1939, and later moved to Karachi. In his early teens, he had the experience of traveling alone through Chittagong, Calcutta, and Colombo. He mastered a lot about life and its harsh journey during his travels.

He also gained great respect for the artistic traditions of the past, while traveling. This journey’s impressions later influenced his thinking and work.

Jamil Naqsh was a recipient of Sitara-e-Imtiaz (2009) and Pride of Performance (1989). Naqsh The death of Jamil Naqsh is a great loss to the Pakistani and international art community.
