Trump believes he was the rightful recipient of Nobel Peace Prize

US President Donald Trump believes that last year’s Nobel Peace Prize which was awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was unjust, saying that he was the rightful recipient of the prize.

American journalist, Aaron Rupar shared a video clip on his Twitter handle in which Trump can be seen telling his supporters, at a campaign event in Toledo, Ohio, that he “saved a big war” but was overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize.

“I’m going to tell you about the Nobel Peace Prize, I’ll tell you about that. I made a deal, I saved a country, and I just heard that the head of that country is now getting the Nobel Peace Prize for saving the country. I said: ‘What, did I have something to do with it?’ Yeah, but you know, that’s the way it is. As long as we know, that’s all that matters… I saved a big war, I’ve saved a couple of them,” he said.

Reports said that Trump was mentioning about the 2019 peace prize winner, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. However, he did not take the Ethiopian Prime Minister’s name in his speech.

Abiy, 43, became Africa’s youngest prime minister after assuming power in April 2018 following months of anti-government demonstrations that had led to the resignation of his predecessor.

He is credited for introducing massive liberalising reforms to Ethiopia, shaking up what was a tightly controlled nation, reports stated.

Abiy was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 by the Nobel Committee for his efforts to end the country’s decades-long conflict with neighbouring Eritrea.

Since the time he took over the country, he started mending relations with Eritrea after decades of conflict between them.

On July 9, 2018, after a historic meeting in Eritrea’s capital Asmara, Abiy and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki formally ended a 20-year-old deadlock between the countries in the wake of the 1998-2000 border conflict.

Later, a peace deal was signed and embassies have been reopened and flight routes between the countries resumed.
