The whole world saw what happened at the U.S open women’s final as Serena Williams lost to Japanese player Naomi Osaka. The event made headlines all across the world for not just being the final but for the Serena Williams behavior. Serena who was playing for her record bid for equaling 24th Grand Slam title lost after the controversial decision of the umpire.
The whole incident has sparked a debate on sexism. This kind of thing is reported to be first ever incident in history of tennis. Williams was given a penalty by the chair umpire after he believed she received coaching advice from her coach who was sitting the front row. She was later docked a point for the second violation when she smashed her racket and for fiery exchange of arguments with the umpire she was penalized a game for verbal abuse.
Serena Williams was fined $17,000 for the code violations that included calling the umpire a “liar” and “thief” in the US Open 2018 women singles final loss. According to the BBC tennis presenter, Sue Barker, “The umpire was following the rules by the book but Serena has a point.”
According to the latest development WTA has backed up Serena, WTA chief executive Steve Simon said the umpire showed Williams a different level of tolerance over Saturday’s outbursts than if she had been a man.
