Emotet World’s Most Dangerous Malware Botnet Taken Down

Emotet the world’s most dangerous malware botnet has been taken down by an international team of investigators.

As being reported, the Emotet infrastructure had been used mainly by organized crime networks but was taken over after a two-year investigation in eight countries.

The successful operation is the result of a collaborative effort between authorities in the Netherlands, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Lithuania, Canada, and Ukraine, with international activity coordinated by Europol and Eurojust. 

The international law-enforcement agency shared the news in a tweet says: “Bye-bye botnets. The huge global operation brings down the world’s most dangerous malware.”

A Europol spokesperson said that the Emotet has been one of the “most dangerous instruments for cyberattacks” in recent years, adding that it had first appeared in 2014 as a so-called trojan.

“The Emotet infrastructure was able to infect entire networks in a unique way just by accessing a few devices,” the spokesman added.

Nigel Leary, Deputy Director of the UK’s National Cyber Crime Unit explained that the “Emotet was instrumental in some of the worst cyber attacks in recent times and enabled up to seventy percent of the world’s malware including the likes of Trickbot and RYUK.”
