‘So Much More to Me than Being a Cancer Survivor’ Says Sonali Bendre

Last year Indian actress Sonali Bendre shared the shattering news of her diagnosis of high grade cancer. She then went to US for her treatment and many admired her resilience and courage against the life threatening disease. Over the course of last one year, Sonali was quite vocal about her battle against the illness and did not hesitate to share her journey with her friends and fans.

The actress also shared a picture of herself as she lost her hair, and continued to put up the fight till it was over. Now Sonali is back in India but she does not want to wear the badge of a ‘cancer survivor’ and move around.

“There is so much to me than just being a cancer survivor. It is not a badge I want to wear and move around. The only reason I talk about it is that nobody discusses it. I am not a doctor or scientist. But if me coming out and discussing it is getting people to talk about it, then I think it’s my duty to talk about it instead of wallowing in self-pity,” said Hum Saath Saath Hain actress at an event.

Sonali also added that she would never want to take up role of cancer survivor or patient, as she does not want to relive those horrible moments of her life. She added that while her former co-star Manisha Koirala was able to play Nargis Dutt (a cancer patient) in Sanju, for her it was different.

“Manisha made a comeback when she was cancer free. I am not yet. My journey is a little different. I don’t think I would ever want to play the role of a cancer survivor,” said the 44-year old actress.
