How to prepare your skin for fall season?

Many people like fall season, including me. It indicates that winter is not too far, after all. In fact, it is bliss for oily skinned people who have hyperhidrosis on their face because they get less oily and sweat less. Then there are people who simply despise this season and the climate during fall months. Their skin starts flaking because of dryness, dry patches appear all over the face, lips start to chap and sometimes bleed. However, this problem is not only with dry skinned people. Everyone needs to prepare their skin for fall season and continue the regime in winters as well.

Here’s how you can help your skin cope with fall season.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Okay, this may sound too mainstream but honestly, nothing can replace water and the wonders it can do. Keeping yourself hydrated is one of the most important tasks in dry season. People who get totally dependent on skin hydrating products rather than giving their body and skin enough water have to face problems like dry patches, cracked lips, dry hands, scaling around nails and dullness. The more water you drink, the more your skin will detoxify.

Invest in a light weight, suitable and hypoallergenic moisturizer

It is a tough job to find the perfect moisturizer for your skin, however it is an important part of one’s skincare routine. I’m not saying that it’s all you need to apply on your face and make your skin used to it, but every now and then your skin needs to be nourished. Get a moisturizer which is suitable for your skin type (dry, normal, combination or oily) and make sure it is hypoallergenic so you don’t get any side effects.

Some of the best options are:

Clinique Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly

Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer for Combination skin

Neutrogena Hydro Boost water gel

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream

Nivea Soft Creme

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream

Lukewarm water over hot water on skin

Many of us start using warmer water as fall hits because it makes our skin feel softer and healthy. But such effect doesn’t last long. This is because hot water tends to make skin dryer overtime. When the water evaporates, it takes away the hydration of the skin as well. Of course it is difficult for some people to bathe or shower with lukewarm water in fall or winter, therefore it is recommended to at least pour lukewarm (or normal temperature) water all over your head down to your body after you’re done bathing or showering. It really helps the skin keep the moisture inside of it.

Gently exfoliate your skin at least twice a week

Cleansing your skin is a major task that many people skip in fall/winter. This is when your skin needs to be taken care of the most. I still insist on using least products. Also, go for the products that are hypoallergenic so you don’t get any side effects. Here are some great options for gentle exfoliating scrubs with mild formulas.

St. Ives soft Skin Avocado & Honey scrub

Neutrogena naturals purifying pore scrub

If you don’t want to use products for exfoliation at all, go organic!
Crush some sugar and add 100% organic coconut oil in it. Apply it on your face, leave it for 10 minutes then gently scrub it off of your face. You can repeat the process thrice a week. You’re welcome!

Essential oils

If you’re too afraid of using skincare products, you can happily get used to organic options. Essential oils are one great thing that are easy to use, with no side effects at all if used correctly. Do you know why essential oils are called essential oils? Because once your skin gets used to it, you cannot live without it. But this is not similar to making your skin dependent on something; in fact, essential oils keep your skin really beautiful that you make it an essential part of your skincare routine.
Some essential oils that can be used without any additive and on any skin type are:

  • Almond oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Lavender oil
  • Rosemary oil

The following oils are recommended for oily skin only. They are strong and need to be mixed with coconut oil or almond oil before applying.

  • Tea tree oil
  • Lemon oil

It is recommended for you to patch test every product on your skin first before makingit a part of your skincare routine.
