Drive against illegal building construction begins in Delhi Colony, Karachi

In the latest development on the operation against illegal buildings razing on the order of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the procedure continued in Karachi’s Delhi Colony on Tuesday.

The razing of an 11-storey building in the area began early morning on Tuesday. The apartment complex comprises 24 flats and four shops.

Authorities of the Clifton Cantonment Board are facing acute troubles in the operation against the demolition of the building due to the dense population in the colony as narrow lanes are adjacent to the illegal structure.

A large number of residents of the area and the building gathered at the time of the process and expressed their grave concerns over its demolition saying that the government should first provide alternate space to them before demolishing illegal structures.

“The shops, markets, shopping centers, and residential units are being demolished by the authorities without providing alternate space,” one of the residents told while interviewing to a private TV channel.

Another resident, Karim, said, “it was unjust to deprive a person of their residence without giving them alternate space or time to move to another place”.

According to the authorities, the illegal structure consists of Ground+11 floors and no one is residing in it.

“We are having a team of technical experts, who is monitoring the entire situation and steps being taken to demolish the structure without any damage to nearby buildings,” said the authority.

The authority of  the Clifton Cantonment Board also confirmed that the demolition work would be finalized by the end of this week.
