George Floyd’s murder case verdict announced

George Floyd’s murder case verdict has been announced.

The former Minneapolis Police officer who kneeled on George Floyd’s neck for over 9 minutes last year was found guilty of all three charges against him.

45-year-old Derek Chauvin was convicted on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.

As being reported, the jury deliberated for more than 10 hours over two days in coming to their decision.

The judge said that the sentencing will take place in 8 weeks. State asked bail will be revoked.

As per the verdict the possible jail time to be served could be: 

  1. 2nd-degree unintentional murder: 40 years max sentence
  2. 3rd-degree murder: 25 years
  3. 2nd-degree manslaughter: 10 years or $20k fine

George Floyd’s death in May 2020 had sparked worldwide protests against racial injustice led by the Black Lives Matter group.

This case has been one of the most consequential trials of the Black Lives Matter era.

It was for the first time a white police officer has been found legally responsible for the death of a black man in custody in Minnesota’s history, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family of George Floyd, has shared a statement on social media, He called the verdict “painfully earned justice” for both the family and their community.
