Greece migrant boat disaster: Pakistan to observe day of mourning on June 19

Pakistan to observe a day of mourning on June 19 in the wake of the Greece migrant boat disaster.

On Wednesday, a fishing boat with around 750 people on board according to a European rescue support charity — sank in open seas off Greece.

Many Pakistanis are feared dead although the exact number has not yet been officially confirmed.

The Foreign Office on Saturday confirmed that 12 Pakistanis had been found alive in the tragic accident.

According to a notification issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the day of mourning will be observed throughout the country tomorrow.

While the national flag will fly at half mast at all the important buildings.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his grief over the tragic incident of the boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Greece resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people, and announced a countrywide day of mourning on Monday (tomorrow).

Migrants rescued from a boat that sank off the south coast of Greece carrying hundreds of people on June 14 were placed inside a warehouse in Kalamata.

Witness accounts suggest between 600 and 750 people had been on the fishing boat which capsized on Wednesday morning.

The survivors are all boys and men from Egypt, Pakistan, Syria, and the Palestinian territories.
