Khalid Jawed Khan appointed as the new AGP

Barrister Khalid Jawed Khan has been appointed as the new Attorney General for Pakistan after Anwar Mansoor Khan tendered his resignation from the post, ministry of Law and Justice issued as notification on Saturday.

The official notification of law ministry released today stated: “In exercise of powers conferred under Article 100(1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan 1973, the President is pleased to appoint Mr. Khalid Jawed Khan as Attorney General for Pakistan with the rank and status of Federal Minister with immediate effect.”

The federal government took the decision to appoint Khalid Jawed Khan as the new AGP on Thursday.

It was also confirmed by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan in her statement to media.

Khalid Jawed has replaced Anwar Mansoor Khan who had tendered his resignation from the post of AGP on Thursday, for levelling allegations against some members of the Supreme Court bench hearing petitions challenging the filing of presidential reference against Justice Qazi Faez Isa.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court had directed Khan to provide evidence backing up his controversial statements or submit a written apology about his comments.

The statement itself had been expunged from the court record.

Later on Thursday, Khan submitted a written apology to the Supreme Court. He claimed that he had decided to step down on his own in compliance with the demand of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC).

The federal government on Thursday also submitted a reply to the Apex Court regarding the controversial remarks made by Anwar Masood Khan in court earlier in the week, saying that the comments by Khan were unauthorised and without the knowledge of the federal government.
