Pakistan closes boarders with Iran, Afghanistan to ensure security during polls

Pakistan on Wednesday closed its border crossings with Iran and Afghanistan to ensure security during polls.

The decision was announced by the Foreign Office (FO) on Wednesday.

“To ensure full security during the general elections to be held in Pakistan on 8 Feb 2024, border crossings with Afghanistan and Iran would remain closed both for cargo and pedestrians. Normal operations would resume on 9 Feb 2024,” a statement issued by FO said.

The announcement was made after a wave of terrorist attacks across the country, including twin bomb blasts on election offices in Balochistan, which killed 25 people and left dozens injured.

On the other hand, K-P province has also been on high alert ahead of the polling.

Terrorists have been targeting various locations in almost daily occurrences in the province in recent weeks.

On February 5, at least 10 police officials were martyred when terrorists stormed the police station in Dera Ismail Khan.

In the past few days, security forces have launched several intelligence-based operations against militant hideouts in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
