Oscar-winner Natalie Portman has joined hands with Serena Williams and a few other female Hollywood celebrities to form a professional women’s soccer team. The team which goes by the informal coined name ‘Angel City’ is the 11th to join the National Women Soccer League (NWSL) and is the first majorly women-owned group.
“Today we take an exciting step by announcing the first women majority-owned and led ownership group,” said Natalie.
“Sports are such a joyful way to bring people together, and this has the power to make a tangible change for female athletes both in our community and in the professional sphere,” the Black Swan actress added.
Alongside Natalie and Serena, celebrities such as Jessica Chastain, Eva Longoria, America Ferrera, and Jennifer Garner are among the runners of the group. The investors’ group includes Williams’s young daughter Olympia, and several former US Women’s National Team players like Mia Hamm, Lauren Cheney Holiday and Abby Wambach.
Sports entrepreneur Julie Uhrman will be the franchise president, which is yet to have a formal name.
The NWSL so far has nine teams with the 10th team Louisville FC joining the league soon. Founded in 2013, NWSL is the first of the sports league to resume activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
