Leading Urdu poet Prof. Shamim Hanafi passes away in New Delhi due to coronavirus

Leading Urdu poet Shamim Hanafi passed away in New Delhi aged 82 due to coronavirus on Thursday.

As being reported, leading Urdu poet, critic, and playwright Shamim Hanafi contracted the coronavirus a few days ago, was admitted to a local hospital in New Delhi where he died on Thursday evening.

Born on  May 17, 1939, in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, he graduated from Allahabad University and Aligarh Muslim University.

He has been associated with the teaching department first at Aligarh Muslim University and then at Jamia Millia Islamia Delhi.

Hanafi was famous for his literary contributions to the Urdu language, including writing plays, poetry, and critique.

He translated Abul Kalam Azad’s famous book ‘India wins freedom.’

Some of his own best-selling works include “Manto Haqiqat se Afsaane Tak” and “Jaadeediyat Ki Falsafyana Asas.”

Shamim Hanafi was frequently invited to visit Pakistan as a guest at literary fairs, especially the International Urdu Conference, where his speeches have always been very interesting and insightful to the audience.

Arts Council Karachi President Ahmad Shah expressed grief over the death of Shamim Hanafi and offered condolences to his family.

Mr. Shah said that Shamim Hanafi will always live among us through his work and literary virtue. He also offered prayers for the late Shamim Naqvi.
